Pet-Friendly Cafes and Places in Mumbai: A Pet Parent's Guide

Several Mumbai cafes have been named as pet-friendly, from Colaba and Lower Parel to Bandra, Khar and Andheri West, but pet policies change, so always call a venue before you take your pet. Brunch with your Indie at your feet sounds simple, yet one outdated listing can mean a wasted trip across the city. This guide to pet friendly cafes in Mumbai includes only venues named as pet-friendly in two dated 2025 magazine features, plus the rules Mumbai's civic body, the BMC, sets for dogs in public, and a checklist pet parents can use before any outing.

Key Takeaways

  • The venues below were named as pet-friendly in magazine articles from August and December 2025; call ahead, because policies change.

  • Three were described with pet-friendly outdoor or patio seating, so ask where your dog can sit.

  • The BMC says owners must clean up after their dog in public, and that leashing in public places is advisable.

  • Carry your own water and bowl, find shade and keep human food out of reach.

What Are the Best Pet Friendly Cafes in Mumbai?

We cannot rank the best, but nine Mumbai cafes, restaurants and bars were named as pet-friendly in two lifestyle magazine features from August and December 2025, from Colaba to Andheri West. We have not visited or rated them, and details may have changed since; each entry gives only what the source said then.

South Mumbai: Colaba

Lower Parel and BKC

Bandra and Khar

Andheri West

Are There Pet Friendly Places in Navi Mumbai?

We could not confirm any pet friendly cafes in Navi Mumbai from a venue's own website or a dated 2025 or 2026 publication, so we have not listed any. The same goes for Vasai-Virar. For Thane, Outlook Traveller notes that Doolally has "multiple taprooms across the city in Andheri, Khar, and Thane", but its pet comments describe Doolally in general, so call the Thane taproom ahead, as policies change.

Can I Take My Dog to Restaurants in Mumbai?

You can take your dog to a restaurant in Mumbai only where the venue allows it, so check with each one first. The PDSA, a UK vet charity, gives advice in its guide to taking your dog to the pub: "never assume that a pub is dog-friendly". If you are unsure, it suggests giving the venue a call or checking its website and social pages before you go.

What Rules Does the BMC Set for Dogs in Public?

The BMC's guidelines say pet owners must clean up after their dog in public, and that keeping dogs on a lead in public places is advisable. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai's civic body, set this out in its 2025 guidelines for pet and street dogs.

The guidelines for pet owners include:

Are Dogs Allowed in Mumbai Parks and Gardens?

We found no official BMC list of which public gardens allow dogs, so ask at the garden itself. The BMC's guidelines do speak to housing societies. They say "Seeking to ban pets from gardens or parks is short-sighted" and that "Efforts must be made to create time slots, when the pets can access gardens, parks and grounds." They also advise societies to agree pet walking timings by consensus, so ask yours.

What Should I Check Before Taking My Dog to a Cafe?

Check the venue's pet policy, your dog's readiness and what you need to carry before you leave home.

1. Call Ahead and Ask Where Pets Can Sit

The Royal Kennel Club, a UK dog organisation, says in its advice on visiting dog-friendly places to eat: "Research the restaurant, pub or cafe by looking at their website and calling beforehand". It also suggests you "Reserve a table at a time when the restaurant is quieter and in the best location for your dog".

2. Feed and Walk Your Dog First

"Feed your dog before going out so they are less likely to be tempted by any food," the Royal Kennel Club advises. It also says a walk beforehand helps "so they will settle when you sit down to eat/drink".

3. Pack Water, a Bowl, Treats and Poo Bags

The PDSA says to "be prepared with your own treats and fresh water". It warns that "Communal dog water bowls can bring their own problems, which can make your dog ill, so do take your own!" It adds: "don't forget the poo bags!"

4. Hold the Lead, Never Tie It

"Use a short lead," says the Royal Kennel Club, as it "will act as a safety device so that your dog doesn't run away and will also prevent a trip hazard". It also warns: "Make sure you don't attach your dog's lead to a table or chair because these are not necessarily secure and can injure your dog and other people".

The PDSA takes a different view on length, suggesting a lead long enough for your dog to lie down. Choose what suits your dog and the space, but keep hold of it.

5. Check Vaccinations With Your Vet

The BMC requires yearly vaccination, as above. If you are unsure whether your dog is due, ask your vet or see our dog and cat vaccination schedule for India.

How Do I Keep My Dog Safe and Cool at a Cafe?

Keep your dog in the shade with plenty of water, and keep your food off the floor and out of reach. The PDSA warns that "your dog can quickly overheat", and suggests keeping cool "by sitting indoors or seeking out the shade of a tree and providing plenty of water." See our guide to pet care in summer in India.

Food is the other risk. The PDSA says to "check that the floor is clear of potential doggy snacks" when you sit down, and notes that teaching "leave" "can help you remove the item before it is swallowed and causes harm." The Royal Kennel Club advises: "Refrain from feeding your dog at the table", warning that "human foods can be harmful to dogs". See our list of human foods dogs can and cannot eat.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these mistakes on a cafe outing.

When to Call a Groomer or a Vet

Call a vet, not a groomer, if your dog seems unwell, overheated or may have eaten something harmful on an outing. A groomer is not a vet. Book a groom once your dog is healthy and up to date with vaccinations.

Can You Get Your Dog Groomed at Home Before an Outing?

Yes. A fresh groom at home before a cafe trip means no car ride and no cage. FurDial's groomers come to you across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Vasai-Virar, and every groomer has 5+ years of experience.

The Clean Aesthetic (₹1,699, about 90 minutes) includes a deep conditioning bath, a blow dry right down to the skin, a brush out, nail clipping and filing, ear cleaning, paw cleaning with pads checked, and eye cleaning. Prices include GST, there is no travel charge and you can pay after the service by UPI or cash, or pay online. Only pets with up-to-date core vaccinations can be groomed. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need a Licence for My Dog in Mumbai?

Yes. The BMC says "It is mandatory for the pet dog owners to register their dog with BMC and get appropriate license", and "Keeping dogs without license is illegal." Its guidelines list a BMC helpline: 9635839888.

Can My Teenager Take Our Dog to a Cafe Alone?

Not under the BMC's guidelines if they are under 18. The civic body says "Children below 18 years of age must not be allowed to walk or handle pets in public spaces without adult supervision."

How Do I Know My Dog Wants to Go Home?

Watch their body language. The PDSA lists signs: "Holding their ears back, tucking their tail underneath them, licking their lips, yawning and hiding away, are all signs your dog is feeling unhappy." The PDSA treats these as cues that it is time to head home. Learn more in our guide to dog and cat body language.

Final Thoughts

Treat any list as a starting point. Phone the venue, pack water and poo bags, hold your dog's lead, sit in the shade and keep human food out of reach. If anything seems wrong with your dog, see a vet.
